What is Coastal Skipper?

Aimed at people who have significant sailing experience, the five day RYA Coastal Skipper course is designed to give a licence to the sailor who is capable of skippering a small yacht independently of flotillas – these licences are now required by SunSail and other reputable agencies. 

Those who sit through the theory of Coastal Skipper will have the knowledge and (hopefully) ability to handle themselves and their crew safely on a Yacht alone – you will now be further away from help than ever before.  Once a skipper, safety comes first, and this course looks in more depth at issues studied previously: a basic knowledge of Safety Equipment and Clothing; how to rig up and de-rig; a basic knowledge of how wind affects steering and sail handling; emergency procedures including First Aid Response; passage planning, including victualling and weather forecasting; and a fair bit more.

What do I need to start the course?

Absolutely nothing!  Everything you need will be provided for in the course itself.

 Obviously, a significant knowledge of sailing and the above would be useful, if you are intending to use your day skipper licence to charter sailing yachts to sail offshore as a skipper!!!  Most participants will already hold the RYA Day Skipper ticket or equivalent.
